Kellie
Jo Jackson came into this world from Heavenly Father on January 28, 1960.
Our little John William was 8 and a ½ months old and I was expecting our
daughter (although we didn’t know it was a girl as we didn’t do ultrasounds in
those days) around the middle of March. Mick was going to BYU at the
time. We had lived in the basement apartment of Mel and Leola Grant in
American Fork since he started school. But knowing that we were going to
have another child, we moved down the street to an upstairs, two-bedroom
apartment. What were we thinking? Upstairs with two infants.
But that is another story.
It
was the evening of January 28 when I started to have some pains. Figuring
it was just Braxton Hicks, I went on with what I was doing, which was ironing,
and suddenly my water broke. Luckily Mick was home studying and we
decided we had better go to the hospital. We called the land lady who
said she would watch John. When we got to the hospital the nurse said,
sure enough, I was in full labor. But she said, just don’t push. It
was close to midnight and she said they would charge us for a full day if I delivered that day. Kellie didn't wait, she was born about
11:45 p.m. on January 28, 1960 in the American Fork Community Hospital and she
has been a mover ever since.
When
she was born she weighed 5 lb 3 oz. She was perfect, but very
petite. As most babies do, she lost some weight and fell below 5 pounds,
and in those days they would not let the baby out of the hospital until they
were 5 pounds. So she lived in a little heated crib for about 4 days
until her weight improved enough to bring her home. I would put little John in
the stroller and we would to go the hospital and peer through the window at the
new little sister. What a great day when we could bring her home.
As
she grew it was fun to go to the store and see a pretty outfit and go home and
make it for her. Also her auntie Sue sent her many cute
outfits. She was the best dressed kid on the block!
